Channa Masala


1 tablespoon Vegetable oil/ Butter/ Canola Oil 1 large onion, chopped 2 to 3 garlic cloves, minced One can chickpeas, drained and rinsed ½ tsp Sk’s garam masala 1 ½ teaspoon Sk’s Curry Masala 2 teaspoons grated fresh or jarred ginger 2 large tomatoes, diced 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/4 cup minced fresh cilantro, or to taste (optional) Salt to taste PREPARATION Heat the oil in a wide skillet. Add ginger and garlic sauté it till they start turning brown Add the onion and sauté until translucent. Time to add tomatoes and Sk’s Curry powder. Saute the onion tomato paste till it becomes totally mushy and starts oozing butter from sides. Add the chickpeas then cook over medium-low heat for 10 minutes, stirring frequently. This should be moist and stewlike, but not soupy; add a little more water, if needed. Stir in the cilantro and season with salt. Serve on its own in shallow bowls or over a hot cooked grain, if desired.

Recipe of Carrot Soup (Vegan)

1 and 1/2 lbs medium carrots, trimmed, peeled, sliced lengthwise, and cut into 1-inch pieces 2 medium yellow onions, chopped into 1-inch pieces 2 tablespoons (liquid state) coconut oil or extra virgin olive oil 2 teaspoons sk’s garam masala small pinch of ground cayenne pepper 3/4 teaspoon Kosher salt 1 can (13 or 14 ounces) full-fat coconut milk (or light coconut milk) juice of half a lime freshly ground black pepper Cilantro for garnishing (optional) Recipe- DIRECTIONS: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 C). Line a sheet pan with aluminum foil and place the carrots and onions on the aluminium foil, sprinkle Sk’s garam masala, cayenne pepper, and salt. Also drizzle some coconut milk on it Toss the vegetables with your hands to evenly coat the vegetables. Spread into an even, thin layer. Roast the carrots and onions until lightly caramelized and very fork tender, tossing them halfway through, about 25 to 35 minutes. Place the coconut milk around 1 tablespoon and 1 and 1/4 cups boiling hot water in a high capacity blender. Transfer the roasted carrots and onions to the blender. Add the lime juice. Puree until very smooth and creamy. If the soup is too thick, add a few tablespoons of hot water at a time until desired consistency is reached. Season the soup to taste with salt, pepper, and additional lime juice (if desired). Serve the soup hot from the blender, garnishing with a drizzle of coconut milk, olive oil, and fresh cilantro as...

Pepper Masala- Thinking what to do with green pepper try this-


2 green pepper

1 onion cut into small pieces

mustard seeds

kari leaves (optional)

Turmeric powder

red chilli powder

coriander powder

Ginger Garlic paste

salt to taste



put oil in your wok, and make it hot. Add mustard seeds and wait for them to be splutter, add curry leaves and then onions. Watch my youtube link.

Add some salt so that you onions cook fast, saute the onions, and add turmeric powder.

When onions start turning brown add green pepper and saute them.FullSizeRender (1)

Add Coriander powder and red chilli powder

Don’t over cook green pepper.

Stir fry them for 5 mins more and you pepper masala is ready

Garnish it with coriander leaves and Your easy Pepper masala which take only 10 mins to prepare is ready. Eat with bread or rice.

Goddess Durga Has Arrived!

With Goddess Durga coming finally to meet her children, In India today the festival celebrations have started. According to Bengalis- She has come riding on a horse this year to give us our blessings. The navratre has started , the joy is tremendous, with Gujaratis playing Garba, the entire North India has started the fasting, and Bengalis are already excited for the Durga Puja coming up. The festival also symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, as in Hindu mythology, Durga famously destroyed the demon Mahishasura after a battle that lasted nine nights. The 10 days and 9 nights of Nevratri are filled with ritualistic chanting, prayers, fasting and celebration. Farmers sow seeds and ask Goddess Durga for her blessing for healthy crops. I am from Bengal so how can I forget the Durga Puja celebration. The largest and most elaborate celebrations where Indians worship massive idols of Durga. Women often go shopping for new clothes, as the time is considered ideal for buying gold or jewelry. I wish I could show you how elaborate are the celebrations. If I start about talking about food- its all vegetarian this time- yes no meat and no eggs. But the food is the most delicious part- Sabudana Kheer, Sabudana vada, Poori, yum yum ok I have to stop writing on foods or else I have to book flight tickets to India right now. Memories of Rajma Chawal (Kidney beans curry)

I was one of the most pampered and spoilt children. Being Daddy’s only girl I used to be very demanding, picky and all other adjectives which you can put for a spoilt child. But Chandigarh changed my life. I was 19 when I went to Chandigarh (one of the most beautiful cities in India) for my graduation. I loved my graduation days- even though that was the time when I tripped a lot and then because of no support I had to get up again. I still remember getting on the bikes and taking Geris of chandigarh. Whats Geri -only a Chandigarh person can understand.

Well back to topic- Punjab University was the place where we used to get the best Rajma chawal. My moms dish is nothing compared to the University’s Rajma Chawal. Keep in front of me Tandoori Chicken and University’s rajma Chawal- you know what am I gonna choose. Oh my God my mouth is watering right now. I never used to be tired of eating it. Thats the only dish I always used to order and the price to have one plate of Rajma chawal is unbelievable, only 10 Rs. not even 25 cents.

Spend ₹ 1o and you get Rajma (kidney beans curry) Basmati Rice, raita (yogurt). I still remember 2 of us could share that plate. Who wants to make food at home when everything is easily available at the University. How is Rajma chawal made- pretty easy-

In most punjabi homes the rajma is cooked till they become soft enough to melt in the mouth.

  • Soak 1 cup (200 grams) rajma beans in enough water overnight or for 8 to 9 hour
  • Drain the soaked water
  • Time to boil the rajma till the rajma is ready to melt in your mouth

Time to make the masala (Curry)

  • cut your onions- I would take 2-3 onions and grind it
  • take a wok- put oil into it and warm it
  • add1 tsp cumin seeds, and ginger garlic
  • add onions till they turn brown- and then ½ tsp red chili powder, ½ tsp turmeric powder and salt
  • take 3 tomatoes grind it well and then add tomatoes to the onion masala
  • cover it, let the masala dance together and make a perfect spicy masala for Rajma

Make rajma

When masala is ready add it to the boiled Rajma, stir it well and keep it aside for 30 mins . Make your basmati rice and serve it hot.

Have other plans on May 10th how about start treating her special on May 9th for Chicken Vindaloo class. If chicken Vindaloo is your moms favourite dish or if she loves chicken but doesn’t get enough time to prepare it. It is the easiest chicken recipe and healthy too.Registration- $40.

I am not a grass eater, I am a vegetarian.

I remember when I was a vegetarian (Yes I do eat chicken now) people always used to tease me – “Shivani loves easting grass”. “Hey I don’t eat Grass I eat veggies.” But I was never able to explain them. I still remember when I must be 13 or 14 years old; my friends mom asked me- “What if your husband asks me to eat? “Oh! my toughest question for a 13 year old. I wish she asked me now I would have told- “I will tell him mind your own business” but for a 13 year old, it was like -” I don’t want to get married if he asks me to eat chicken or fish.” But time changed and I came to Canada, after being 1 year vegetarian; I realized if I wanted to live in Canada with spices I have to go Non- veg. There is no good spicy vegetarian food you can find on streets. Chinese is not chinese what I used to have in India. Even Indian restaurants are not the same. So I started eating Chicken. Hey! thats not true any more, even with all veggies you can survive in Canada. As I will be bringing Spices in the Veggies. So for all Vegetarians and Vegans I am with you guys.(for all the people who love spices). We can survive without going non- vegetarian( Irrespective of the fact, I love chicken now :P) There is a wide debate as to whether it is better to be a vegetarian or a non vegetarian. People in either camp have pretty much dug their heels in swearing.

Naan- Kathai

Naan Kathai- I still remember how I used to make fun of Naankathai- by singing the song “naan kathai naan masala naan kathai” I wish I could sing in my blog- but I can give you the idea of the tune – used to copy the paan parag guys.

But I should say I used to love the naankathai when my neighbour used to bring it for me. Oh yes how can u forget the rediwala (Kiosk) in old delhi, who used to sell naankathai. Even though all the dust of old Delhi used to sit on his naankathai but they were the best naankathais.

I told you the entire history of Naankathai and didn’t tell what Naan Kathai is- It is tea biscuit, you can also call Indian Cookies. So I am going to share the Naankathai recipe with all of you.


1 cup solid salted butter

1 cup all purpose flour

1 cup icing sugar (powdered sugar)

1 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp cardamom powder

1/2 cup almonds/cashew nuts, whole (optional)

Dough making

Take the butter in a bowl (soft, but not melted) add the sugar to it and beat it.

When you see a good consistency has arrived, time to add all purpose flour(maida), baking powder, cardmon powder

Mix it nicely and make a good dough out of it.

Keep the dough aside for 20 mins, so that all the masala gets mixed in well Till that time preheat the oven to350 degrees farenheit. Form into ping-pong sized balls and place at least 2 inches apart on a baking tray

lightly flatten the balls with a fork or fingers.

Bake for about 12 – 15 minutes. Be careful not to brown them as this will impart a slightly bitter taste.

Remove naan kathais from oven and let them cool in the tray before taking them out. Add almond or cashew nut on top layer where you pressed it with your fingers.( I didn’t have Almonds at my home so I didn’t use them but they were just so perfect without them too)

A perfect treat for you and your kids. I keep my house stacked of these delectable delights, you can do that too.

Think it likes this- Will you be adding water instead of gas to run your car ? Nope? right then how can you put all the wrong things in your stomach. Its your own body. Learn and then make it your self, it will be your choice.

Bored of oily food-

Finally you are bored of eating rich food every day- time to invest in cooking lessons- You don’t need to be rich of talents to do cooking because you want a simple homemade food, which is even good for your stomach.

“Simple food is healthy and homemade food is the best” You just need to learn the basic techniques and then you are going to have fun with it. Weight Management

Are you going to Yoga classes?Then learn to cook – As learning to cook means to take control over your weight. Homemade foods are obviously very low compared to the calories consumed through food you eat at restaurants or food from takeouts.

Impress opposite sex

Let me tell you my husband cooks rarely so the day he cooks thats the best day of my life. Who isn’t impressed with their partner who can cook well? My spouse is :D. There isn’t a woman who will not fall for a man who can cook delicious meals and it falls the same on other side too.
